prepare students for employment/ help students acquire theoretical knowledge Nowadays, the real objective of education has been the focus of the heated debate. Attitudes towards this issue differ widely from person to person and mainly depend on their own position on the question.

To the people who assert that higher education should primarily focus on preparing students for jobs, their logic seems to be that education is useless without the increase of students' employment ratio. This assertion certainly sounds reasonable because whether we want to admit it or not, most people attend to higher education in order to get a better job. Another reason for this viewpoint lies in the fact that technology-driven industries account for an ever-increasing share of our jobs. As advances in technology continue to accelerate, plenty of theoretical knowledge needed for jobs will change more and more quickly. Thus it would be a waste of our education resource to focus on theoretical knowledge that might soon become obsolete.

But the counter-argument is that teach students theoretical knowledge is what university all about. The most convincing argument of this perspective is that during the in-school period, students not always know about their career goals. So if schools place too much emphasis on the job training, it is likely to ignore students' true career interests and limit their employment desire and employability. In addition, theoretical knowledge actually provides the foundations for students to acquire more advanced and practical knowledge. Without such foundations, students would find it difficult to further their studies or lose interest and confidence in the deeper study altogether.

My own opinion is that both two respects are reasonable and necessary but still too one-sided to ignore the nature of education, which I think is to develop good study habits, enrich the feelings, cultivate the sentiment and build the personality. So I suggest that university should focus more on these factors besides teach students theoretical and practical knowledge.
